EMERGING DESIGN TALENT RECOGNIZED BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS IN ANNUAL STUDENT COMPETITION

Music-Inspired Condo, Purposefully Designed Patient Room Take Top Honors

CLEVELAND (June 18, 2019) – Today Sherwin-Williams announces the winners of its ninth Student Design Challenge, an annual competition for design students across North America. First-, second- and third-place winners were awarded in both the residential and commercial categories, in addition to two Facebook fan favorites who were chosen by the public. This year’s competition marked the most entries ever with more than 750 students submitting color renderings of a residential or commercial interior space using a minimum of three Sherwin-Williams colors.

“Year after year, the judges and I are inspired by the level of creativity and skill our future designers evoke in their submissions,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “It is always a pleasure and challenge to select the winners, as I love seeing how these students convey color in a variety of real-life settings using Sherwin-Williams as their palette.”

Submissions included the color renderings along with project statements describing the design and its use of color. The 2019 judging panel included Wadden; Patti Carpenter, principal at Carpenter + Company/Trendscope; and Martyn Lawrence Bullard, principal, and owner of Martyn Lawrence Bullard Design.

Residential Category

Andre Silvestre of Suffolk University won first place in the residential category and was also the Facebook fan-favorite winner. His design, titled “A Symphony of Color,” used the 2019 Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year, Cavern Clay SW 7701, as the main inspiration in a New York City luxury condo located steps from Carnegie Hall.

“Similar to how a symphonic theme unifies a musical composition, the contrasting colors in this project create unifying elements in the apartment,” said Silvestre. “The color duo of Cavern Clay SW 7701 and Night Owl SW 7061 is presented boldly across the living room and entry walls and ceilings before subduing slightly in the dining room and into the kitchen. This primary duo is then enriched by the Ellie Gray SW 7650 of the walls, and Spare White SW 6203 on the ceiling. Finally, like a musical cadenza, the kitchen is accented with the sharply contrasting color, Fabulous Grape SW 6293, in the alcove.”

The second-place winner is Samantha Kragel of Iowa State University. You Li from the Savannah College of Art and Design received third place.

Commercial Category

Saman Jamshidi, a student at Texas Tech University, won first place in the commercial design category for his project depicting a patient’s room at a medical facility. His design used Silvermist SW 7621 from the Sherwin-Williams Acute Care collection as the main color to help reduce stress and increase patient satisfaction.

“Staying in a hospital is a stressful experience for both patients and their family members. Evidence suggests that environmental design can help contribute to positive patient outcomes with color as a key factor in creating a healing environment,” said Jamshidi. “For this project, I carefully chose Silvermist SW 7621 as the main color of the patient room and paired it with Cool Avocado SW 9029 and Crème SW 7556 to convey a sense of home, helping patients and visitors feel relaxed and destressed.”

Karine LeBlanc from Université de Moncton in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada received the second-place prize and Gabriela Morales of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia won third place. Kim Pham of Oklahoma State University was the Facebook fan-favorite winner.

Both Silvestre and Jamshidi will receive a cash prize of $2,500 and be featured in a 2019 edition of Sherwin-Williams STIR Magazine. In addition, their schools will be awarded $1,000 to be used toward design programs. Second-place winners will receive $1,000, third-place winners receive $500 and Facebook fan favorites are given a $100 Sherwin-Williams gift card. All winners will be featured on the Sherwin-Williams Facebook page and in a future issue of the STIR email newsletter. New this year, every student who entered the contest received a free ColorSnapÒ Palette Guide and the 2019 ColormixÒ Forecast fan deck.
