Started by Karl J. Heinzelman, Union Tool is a family-owned business. Co-presidents Chuck Simpson and Mike Simpson represent the third generation, while the fourth generation is represented with Chas Simpson, Chuck’s son, who joined the company after earning an MBA from Ball State University and working several years in the Indianapolis area.
Union Tool Corporation manufactures automated machines and equipment to handle and process flat sheets, boards and panels made of wood, metal, glass, plastic, fiber, foam and other materials in a conveyorized processing line. Machines and equipment include roller coaters, feeders, stackers, de-stackers, hot melt applicators, laminators and lubricators. Union Tool Corporation also provides custom manufactured equipment for a diverse group of industries worldwide.
Union Tool roller coaters are available in roller widths from 6” to 120”. Our roller coater machines coat flat sheets, panels and boards with hot melt, adhesive, protective films, paint, and lubricants, such as drawing compounds. The roll coater or roller coater automatic machines coat one or both sides of a flat substrate, such as metal, wood, glass, fiberboard, foam, or plastic, with precisely controlled thicknesses of coating material as the sheets are conveyed down a production line. We also several hot melt roller coater / laminator combination machines, including machines for the Expanded Polystyrene Industry (EPS), and automotive industry.
Union Tool laminating machines, or panelizers, sandwich core substrate material with facing sheets on one or both sides. This general principle underlies many processes from film lamination to laying up wall, ceiling and floor panels. Pressure roll laminator machines frequently follow glue spreading or coating operations in a production line. Our panelizers and laminating machines are available in roll widths from 6" to 120".
An example of a laminating machine is our veneer/vinyl laminating system, which incorporates a Hot Melt Roller Coater, Powered Lay-up Conveyor and Rotary Laminator. This laminating system runs hand-fed core materials, such as plywood, medium density fiberboard and some metals like aluminum, through a Hot Melt Roller Coater. Adhesive is applied in a smooth, even controlled amount to the top of the core material with the material coming out on a Semi-automatic Lay-up Conveyor. The conveyor moves the coated core to a common edge guide to insure proper positioning of the veneer top layer and delivers the core to a backstop. Upper and lower rolls fit the upper veneer and lower laminated core together. The lower powered conveyor feeds the laminated panel to the rotary laminating press to deliver the final product. Maximum sizes of panels produced can be up 60” wide x 120” long and 4” thick.
